Karnataka government plans to power its villages by solar power

Karnataka government is planning to launch a solar technology programme to in 3900 villages (to be selected by the order of backwardness) to power villages. It is estimated to meet the energy needs of 5.0 million people. Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd has invited bids (tenders) from solar technology companies to design, finance and maintain solar/hybrid power plants. The programme will be made viable by collecting user fee. The power stations will power street lights, water lifting, desalination and water purification plants and may also suppy solar power to local cottage industries.
