Industry Overview

HP Government initiates solar power generation

The hilly state which is abundant in hydro potential, is keen on tapping non conventional energy. It plans to convert National Institute of Technology (NIT) Hamirpur and Y S Parmar University is to be made as solar energy parks with help of MNRES. Gradually, the scheme will cover the towns of Shimla and Harmipur. The programme also involves training youth on solar power systems maintenance and educating people on benefits.

MNRE projects cheaper solar power generation on volumes

Ministry of New and Renewable Energy estimates backed by research projects that capital cost of solar power generation projects will come down by 50% on scaling up from governments. When this happens, solar power costs will have an edge with other options like hydel or nuclear power. With more players on field like BHEL, BEL, Lanco Infratech, Aston-Areva, AES Solar, Reliance Industries in the fray. There is also a downward trend in capital costs of solar power units (Rs.180 million a MW an year ago – now around Rs.140-150 million). Compared to other options solar power has no fuel costs and hence low maintenance. Total estimates of global solar power generation is 14000 MW around 50% of it has been added last year.

IIT Kanpur sets up Solar Energy Research and Experimental Station

IIT Kanpur is planning to set up a 500 kw unit at institute to conduct research on low cost solar energy solutions. Currently, the solar power produced in India costs around Rs.15 per kilo watt hour, whereas conventional energy costs as little as Rs.3.5 per kilo watt hour. The institute will bring in multi discipline team from biotechnology, electrical departments etc.,
